Android in Action, 9781617290503 (1617290505), Manning Publications, 2011

The idea of a writing a book about Android development can be somewhat futile at times, considering the pace at which Android continues to expand, morph, and change. What started out as a book project a few years ago has now become a series of updates to the original work with the page count nearly double the original project— and that after making hard decisions about what to leave out of the book to make sure it gets published.

This update to Android in Action represents our latest effort to provide coverage on important Android development topics, namely the expansion into the tablet space with Android 3.x as well as advances in mobile graphics and media such as RenderScript.

Although there have been many off-brand and name-brand tablet offerings popping up over time, the Android development team has taken the step of adding tabletspecific capabilities to the SDK under the banner of 3.0. True to form, 3.0 was quickly updated, so we generally refer to the tablet-specific features as 3.x; and before long I am sure Android 4.x will be out with a super-set of features.

Like many things in life, the only constant is change, but by now we’re somewhat accustomed to the rapid-fire environment of Android development. To that end, we have ensured that all of the applications in the book work with Android 3.x. The newest chapters covering tablet-specific content (20–22) require the 3.x SDK, whereas the remaining chapters are compatible with the 2.x SDK versions. If you plan to write application software for Android, you simply need to steel yourself for navigating the multiple version game. It is at once a strength and a challenge of the Android ecosystem.

Recent research has increased awareness of chemical residues and natural contaminants in food. At the same time, consumer concerns about food safety have also grown. Investigator's Guide to Steganography

Investigators within the law enforcement and cyber forensics communities are generally aware of the concept of steganography, but their levels of expertise vary dramatically depending upon the incidents and cases that they have been exposed to. Now there is a book that balances the playing field in terms of awareness, and serves as a valuable...

Evolution of Sleep: Phylogenetic and Functional Perspectives
Evolution of Sleep: Phylogenetic and Functional Perspectives

Research during the past two decades has produced major advances in understanding sleep within particular species. Simultaneously, molecular advances have made it possible to generate phylogenetic trees, while new analytical methods provide the tools to examine macroevolutionary change on these trees. These methods have recently been applied to...

Ufos & Anti-Gravity: Piece for a Jig Saw
AT the time of going to press, it is twelve years ago since Stephen Darbishire photographed the Coniston saucer. Twelve years since the writer first examined and correlated the Darbishire and Adamski photographs by orthographic projection in Space, Gravity and the Flying Saucer.

At that time the scientific world was clamouring for 'just

Building and Managing Enterprise-Wide Portals
Inspired by similar questions, we decided to put together a systematic review of current Web technology and trends to meet two goals:
  1. Provide information to people who need general, rather than in depth, technical knowledge such as information technology (IT) development mangers, software designers, architects, IT students, and...
Theory of Relativity
Theory of Relativity

THIRTY-FIVE years ago this article on the theory of relativity, written by me at the rather young age of 21 years for the Mathematical Encyclopedia, was first published as a separate monograph together with a preface by Sommerfeld, who as the editor of this volume of the Encyclopedia was responsible for my authorship. It was the aim of the...
