Applications & Services in Wireless Networks (Innovative Technology Series)

The main challenge in providing mobile users with acceptable real-time multimedia
communication is to provide quality of service support in the context of i)
heterogeneous mobile communication networks, ii) a vast number of different
media formats and codecs, iii) a heterogeneous world of mobile terminals, and iv)
a large possible set of different user QoS specifications. Thus the entire set of QoS
mechanisms, in particular those related to mobility and media support, have to be
orchestrated in order to provide the best possible real-time multimedia communication
results.

From the mobile user’s perspective the focus is on the content of the multimedia
data streams as well as on the associated costs of delivery. In general, the
user will neither like to select a specific codec nor be involved in selecting a
particular access network. Thus, topics like media and mobility handling should
be as transparent to the user as possible. This view might also be shared by the
developer who is interested in rapid development of lightweight mobile
applications. The developer may not want to build full QoS-support into each
application but would prefer to build applications on top of a QoS orchestration
platform that provides easy to use interfaces to available QoS mechanisms
including mobility as well as media management.

This paper is about a joint project between NEC, Siemens and the University
of Ulm, designing and implementing such a QoS orchestration framework. Our
framework goes by the name of MASA which stands for Mobility and Service
Adaptation in Heterogeneous Mobile Communications Networks.

Advances in Applied Bioremediation (Soil Biology)
Advances in Applied Bioremediation (Soil Biology)
Bioremediation is a rapidly advancing field and the technology has been applied successfully to remediate many contaminated sites. The goal of every soil remediation method is to enhance the degradation, transformation, or detoxification of pollutants and to protect, maintain and sustain environmental quality.

Math You Can't Use: Patents, Copyright, and Software
The field of software is awash in disputes. Market participants and analysts routinely disagree on how computer programs should be produced, marketed, regulated, and sold. On one subject, however, just about everyone can agree: the current intellectual property protection regime for software is a mess. At present, all of the traditional means...
Learn the MFC C++ Classes
Learn the MFC C++ Classes
It is not necessary to learn the Windows API in order to begin using the
Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) Library of C++ classes; you do not even
have to know more than a few basic C++ concepts in order to begin. I have
been teaching extension classes through the University of California, Berkeley,
since 1993. My students have
