| Advances in automatic fingerprint recognition are driven by improved fingerprint sensing and advancements in areas such as computer architecture, pattern recognition, image processing, and computer vision. In addition to the new developments in science and technology, several recent social and political events have increased the level of interest in fingerprint recognition for the purpose of positive person identification. This heightened interest in fingerprint technology and its promise to deliver cost-effective solutions have prompted us to undertake the endeavor to edit this book. And indeed, we have been lucky to convince top experts in the world to write 21 chapters on a wide variety of fingerprint topics, ranging from the history of fingerprints to evolving fingerprint standards in a networked society.
The chapters are loosely arranged according to the stages of a pattern recognition system; in other words, following the typical processing steps of automated fingerprint recognition systems. |
