| Considered the bible of the IBM zSeries and S/390 world, this new edition closely examines the role large computers will play in the new century. All the new hardware models and operating system products—Linux, VSE, MVS, VM, AIX, and Open Edition—are now available for the zSeries and are fully explained, as are critical business issues such as cost justification, lease versus purchase, support, security, and maintenance. Hypothetical small, medium, and large businesses are described and then outfitted with the appropriate zSeries solution. This replaces 1885068700.
While the mainframe has a proud forty-year history and has helped transform virtually every aspect of modern life, the IBM eServer zSeries, by comparison, is a precocious two year old. Totally redesigned from the ground up in October 2000 for the launch of eServer, the zSeries is the foundation on which many of today’s eServer innovations are based. At the same time, it is called zSeries, for near zero downtime, because of the outstanding mainframe attributes it carries forward to users. The careful blending of new capabilities and time-proven qualities of service has made the zSeries an important player in the e-business transformation taking place in today’s society. It also is the hallmark of a system that has been reinvented several times to meet the emerging demands of the IT marketplace.
The IBM press release that announced the new IBM eServer zSeries described how it differed from its predecessors. It called the z900 the first mainframe built from scratch with e-business as its primary function— with the ability to run up to hundreds of virtual servers within one physical box and the capability to replace racks full of competitive servers. It also outlined its new 64-bit operating system, z/OS, as well as new software pricing, designed to let customers pay based on what they use instead of total system capacity. The new zSeries set high standards, but what has transpired during the past two years has surprised even the most enthusiastic mainframe supporters.
In addition to driving renewed growth and interest in the mainframe with the z900, IBM has introduced new offerings to provide the benefits of zSeries to a broader spectrum of customers. Following are a few examples.
