Introduction to Systems Analysis: Mathematically Modeling Natural Systems

Buy

Systems and their mathematical description play an important role in all branches of science. This book offers an introduction to mathematical modeling techniques. It is intended for undergrad students in applied natural science, in particular earth and environmental science, environmental engineering, as well as ecology, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, agronomy, and forestry.

The focus is on developing the basic methods of modeling. Students will learn how to build mathematical models of their own, but also how to analyze the properties of existing models. The book neither derives mathematical formulae, nor does it describe modeling software, instead focusing on the fundamental concepts behind mathematical models. A formulary in the appendix summarizes the necessary mathematical knowledge. To support independent learners, numerous examples and problems from various scientific disciplines are provided throughout the book. Thanks in no small part to the cartoons by Nikolas Stürchler, this introduction to the colorful world of modeling is both entertaining and rich in content

Scheduling: Theory, Algorithms, and Systems

This new edition provides an up-to-date coverage of important theoretical models in the scheduling literature as well as  significant scheduling problems that occur in the real world. It again includes supplementary  material in the form of  slide-shows from industry and movies that...

Fundamentals of Electric Circuits
Fundamentals of Electric Circuits

Alexander and Sadiku's third edition of Fundamentals of Electric Circuits continues in the spirit of its successful previous editions, with the objective of presenting circuit analysis in a manner that is clearer, more interesting, and easier to understand than the other texts in the market. Students are introduced to the sound,...

Modern Particle Physics
Modern Particle Physics

Unique in its coverage of all aspects of modern particle physics, this textbook provides a clear connection between the theory and recent experimental results, including the discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN. It provides a comprehensive and self-contained description of the Standard Model of particle physics suitable for upper-level...

Geometry, Topology and Physics, Second Edition (Graduate Student Series in Physics)
Geometry, Topology and Physics, Second Edition (Graduate Student Series in Physics)
This book provides an introduction to the ideas and techniques of differential geometry and topology. It starts with a brief survey of quantum field theory, gauge theory, general relativity, vector spaces, and topology. Using many illustrations, exercises, and problems, the author demonstrates more elaborate concepts of topology and geometry,...
The Nine Numbers of the Cosmos
The Nine Numbers of the Cosmos
"Drawing upon Descartes's saying, 'What do I know?' Rowan-Robinson asks what we know about the universe. In answer, he has come up with nine numbers that summarize our current understanding of the cosmos. . . . The numbers Rowan-Robinson presents are grounded in scientific research, although more than a little speculation was used in deriving...
