A favourite business buzzword at the moment is ‘differentiation’ – that certain something that makes your company more attractive to a potential customer than any of your rivals. Part of the difference will undoubtedly come from things like price, quality, reliability and so on. But this is never the whole story.

Customers may be willing to accept higher prices if they also get preferential status or better quality. Conversely, they may be willing to accept lower quality – as long as it is still within certain tolerances and as long as they get a better base price and bigger discounts.
