Thin Films and Coatings in Biology (Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering)

Buy

The surface of materials is routinely exposed to various environmental influences. Surface modification presents a technological challenge for material scientists, physicists, and engineers, particularly when those surfaces are subjected to function within human body environment. This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the major issues and topics dealing with interaction of soft living matter with the surface of implants. Fundamental scientific concepts are embedded through experimental data and a broad range of case studies. First chapters cover the basics on biocompatibility of many different thin films of metals, alloys, ceramics, hydrogels, and polymers, following with case studies dealing with orthopedic and dental coatings. Next, a novel and low-cost coating deposition technique capable of production of several types of nanostructures is introduced through simple calculations and several illustrations. Moreover, chapter 6 and 7 present important topics on surface treatment of polymers, which is a subject that has seen many developments over the past decade. The last chapters target mainly the applications of coatings in biology such as in bio-sensing, neuroscience, and cancer detection. With several illustrations, micrographs, and case studies along with suitable references in each chapter, this book will be essential for graduate students and researchers in the multidisciplinary field of bio-coatings.

Applying Psychology to Everyday Life: A Beginner's Guide
Applying Psychology to Everyday Life: A Beginner's Guide
I began by wanting to write a book entitled something like Where Psychology Has Gone Wrong. The reason for this desire came from thinking that psychology is a far more interesting and stimulating subject than it would appear to be from a glance at some academic texts and journal articles. Also, many students begin their...

Damage and Interfacial Debonding in Composites (Studies in Applied Mechanics)

This book represents thirteen papers that are based on the presentations made in the five session symposium on "Damage and Interfacial Debonding in Composites" on the occasion of the 32nd Society of Engineering Science Meeting; held in New Orleans, Louisiana, October 29 - November 1, 1995. The five sessions were mainly in the...

Developmental Hematopoiesis: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Medicine)
Developmental Hematopoiesis: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Medicine)

During the past few decades, technical and conceptual breakthroughs have led to a virtual revolution in developmental biology. In part through cross-species compa- sons and multidisciplinary approaches (combining, for example, classical embry- ogy, genetics, molecular biology, and systems biology), major questions have often been redefined...

The Enduring Library: Technology, Tradition, and the Quest for Balance
The Enduring Library: Technology, Tradition, and the Quest for Balance
George Eliot’s Middlemarch, deemed by many the finest English-language novel of the nineteenth century, is rooted in a particular time and place. The time is the late 1820s and early 1830s and the place England—a country going through a profound change. Superstition was giving way to science, quackery to scientific medicine,...
