Dynamics of Complex Systems (Studies in Nonlinearity)

Buy
The study of complex systems in a unified framework has become recognized in recent years as a new scientific discipline, the ultimate in the interdisciplinary fields. Breaking down the barriers between physics, chemistry, and biology and the so-called soft sciences of psychology, sociology, economics and anthropology, this text explores the universal physical and mathematical principles that govern the emergence of complex systems from simple components. Dynamics of Complex Systems is the first text describing the modern unified study of complex systems. It is designed for upper-undergraduate/beginning graduate level students, and covers a broad range of applications in a broad array of disciplines. A central goal of this text is to develop models and modeling techniques that are useful when applied to all complex systems. This is done by adopting both analytic tools, including statistical mechanics and stochastic dynamics, and computer simulation techniques, such as cellular automata and Monte Carlo. In four sets of paired, self-contained chapters, Yaneer Bar-Yam discusses complex systems in the context of neural networks, protein folding, living organisms, and finally, human civilization itself. He explores fundamental questions about the structure, dynamics, evolution, development and quantitative complexity that apply to all complex systems. In the first chapter, mathematical foundations such as iterative maps and chaos, probability theory and random walks, thermodynamics, information and computation theory, fractals and scaling, are reviewed to enable the text to be read by students and researchers with a variety of backgrounds.

Describes the modern unified study of complex systems. Develops models and modeling techniques that are useful when applied to all complex systems. Discusses complex systems in the context of neural networks, protein folding, living organisms. DLC: Biomathematics.

Investment Risk Management (The Wiley Finance Series)
Investment Risk Management (The Wiley Finance Series)
Risk has two sides: underestimating it harms the investor, while overestimating it prevents the implementation of bold business projects. This book explains, from the point of view of the practitioner, the analysis of investment risk - a proper account of adequate risk management strategies - and offers an objective and readable account of the most...
Cost Containment and Efficiency in National Health Systems: A Global Comparison (Health Care and Disease Management)
Cost Containment and Efficiency in National Health Systems: A Global Comparison (Health Care and Disease Management)

Written by a local health economics expert, each of the eight chapters in this timely handbook and ready reference describes the national healthcare system of a different industrialized country. In each case, the 4-5 specific policies with the highest impact on that respective country over the past 20-30 years are identified. In addition, the...

The Book of IRC: The Ultimate Guide to Internet Relay Chat
ICQ and other new-fangled chat applications may get most of the press, but Internet Relay Chat (IRC) remains the Wild West of real-time online conversations. Populated by the most diverse collection of characters this side of the Mos Eisley cantina scene in Star Wars, IRC will keep you up late chatting with people all over the world. The...
Prescribing for Elderly Patients
Prescribing for Elderly Patients

As our population ages, clinicians are faced with an increasing number of elderly patients with multiple medical problems and prescribed medications both in the acute and in the chronic setting. The clinical presentation of common conditions often differs from other age groups and the risk of drug–drug interactions is high, leading to...

Calculus with Analytic Geometry
Calculus with Analytic Geometry

Most students study calculus for its use as a tool in areas other than mathematics. They desire information about why calculus is important, and where andhow it can be applied. I kept these facts in mind as I wrote this text. In particular, when introducing new concepts I often refer to problems that are familiar to students and that require...
