Equilibrium Thermodynamics (Graduate Texts in Physics)

Buy

This textbook provides an exposition of equilibrium thermodynamics and its applications to several areas of physics with particular attention to phase transitions and critical phenomena. The applications include several areas of condensed matter physics and include also a chapter on thermochemistry. Phase transitions and critical phenomena are treated according to the modern development of the field, based on the ideas of universality and on the Widom scaling theory. For each topic, a mean-field or Landau theory is presented to describe qualitatively the phase transitions. These theories include the van der Waals theory of the liquid-vapor transition, the Hildebrand-Heitler theory of regular mixtures, the Griffiths-Landau theory for multicritical points in multicomponent systems, the Bragg-Williams theory of order-disorder in alloys, the Weiss theory of ferromagnetism, the Néel theory of antiferromagnetism, the Devonshire theory for ferroelectrics and Landau-de Gennes theory of liquid crystals. This textbook is intended for students in physics and chemistry and provides a unique combination of thorough theoretical explanation and presentation of applications in both areas. Chapter summaries, highlighted essentials and problems with solutions enable a self sustained approach and deepen the knowledge.

Beginning Java EE 5: From Novice to Professional
Beginning Java EE 5: From Novice to Professional
This book is mainly aimed at people who already have knowledge of standard Java and have
been developing small, client-side applications for the desktop. If you have read and absorbed
the information contained in an entry-level book such as Ivor Horton’s Beginning Java 2 (Wrox,
2004; ISBN 0-7645-6874-4), then you will be well

Semantics-Oriented Natural Language Processing: Mathematical Models and Algorithms
Semantics-Oriented Natural Language Processing: Mathematical Models and Algorithms

This book examines key issues in designing semantics-oriented natural language processing systems. A broad conceptual framework for describing structured meanings of NL-texts is obtained by defining a new class of formal languages called standard knowledge languages (SK-languages) using a system theoretical approach. Readers will gain knowledge...

Software by Numbers: Low-Risk, High-Return Development
Software by Numbers: Low-Risk, High-Return Development

Ultimately, software development is about creating value-yet, all too often, applications fail to deliver the business value customers need. This book will help you change that, by linking software development directly to value creation. You'll learn how to identify which features add value and which don't-and refocus on...

Scientific and Statistical Database Management: 23rd International Conference, SSDBM 2011

Welcome to the proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management held in Portland, Oregon, where it celebrated its 30th birthday. The first incarnation of SSDBM (then called the Workshop on Statistical Database Management) took place in Menlo Park, California, in December 1981. Since...
