Essential MATLAB for Scientists and Engineers

Buy
Based on a teach-yourself approach, the fundamentals of MATLAB are illustrated throughout with many examples from a number of different scientific and engineering areas, such as simulation, population modelling, and numerical methods, as well as from business and everyday life. Some of the examples draw on first-year university level maths, but these are self-contained so that their omission will not detract from learning the principles of using MATLAB.This completely revised new edition is based on the latest version of MATLAB. New chapters cover handle graphics, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), structures and cell arrays, and importing/exporting data. The chapter on numerical methods now includes a general GUI-driver ODE solver.

*Maintains the easy informal style of the first edition
*Teaches the basic principles of scientific programming with MATLAB as the vehicle
*Covers the latest version of MATLAB

The essential guide to learning MATLAB, for beginners and experienced users alike.

For scientists and engineers who have no prior knowledge of computer programming, this hands-on guide presents MATLAB as a problem-solving tool, and introduces both the straightforward use of the Command Window and the programming capability of script files.

Unlike most other texts on MATLAB this book does not assume any knowledge of matrices, and introduces the relevant concepts gradually as the context demands. The author introduces programming principles and algorithm development techniques from first principles, and also encourages shortcuts such as the use of cut and paste.

About the Author

Brian Hahn graduated from the University of Cape Town before obtaining a PhD from Cambridge in high energy physics. He lectured in Applied Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand for a number of years before moving to Cape Town. He is an associate professor (and Head of Department) in Mathematics & Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town, where he has specialised in teaching programming languages to beginners for more than 20 years. He has written a number of popular computing books, on Fortran 77 and 90, GW-BASIC, True BASIC, Turbo Pascal, C++, Matlab and, most recently, Java. When not writing a new book, he carries out research in rangeland modelling. Spare time activies include birding, jogging, and planting indigenous trees on the small holding he shares with his wife and numerous german shepherd dogs. Congestive Heart Failure
Having first decided to organize and edit a book on heart failure in 1992 (with a 1994 publication date), we have been astounded at the changes in the field over a relatively brief 14-year period. It is with some amusement that we now look back at our first edition and note a combined chapter of beta agonists and...
