Free Energy Relationships in Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry

Buy
There are many techniques of varying degrees of generality for the study of mechanisms and that of free energy relationships is the most readily applicable and general. Free energy relationships comprise the simplest and easiest of techniques to use but the results are probably the trickiest to interpret of all the mechanistic tools.

The quantitative study of free energy relationships was first introduced by Brmnsted and Hammett in the early part of the twentieth century. As well as playing a major r6le in understanding and deducing mechanism, free energy relationships have been incorporated into software to provide computational methods for calculating physico-chemical parameters of molecules. Such techniques are of substantial technical importance in drug design3 where parameters such as solubility, pK,, etc. can be useful indicators of the biological activity of chemical structures of potentially therapeutic compounds. Free energy relationships may be employed in the design of synthetic route.

Introducing the application of free energy correlations to elucidating the mechanisms of organic and bio-organic reactions, this book provides a new and illuminating way of approaching a potentially complex topic. The idea of how free energy correlations derive from polar substituent change is introduced, and common pitfalls encountered in the application of free energy relationships are described, along with the use of these anomalies in mechanistic studies. The concept of effective charge is described in detail, with examples of its application. Throughout, worked answers are provided for the problems posed. Databases of parameters, an extensive bibliography and comprehensive lists of further reading are also included. The text provides an invaluable source of information to senior undergraduates, postgraduates and to industrial researchers with an interest in mechanistic studies. It is the first such book in more than thirty years.

Governance as Leadership: Reframing the Work of Nonprofit Boards
Governance as Leadership: Reframing the Work of Nonprofit Boards
Turn back the clock to 1986. One of the authors had an audience with a then education editor of the New York Times as part of a larger effort to kindle media interest in a study this researcher had just launched on college boards of trustees. Less than five minutes into the presentation, the editor interrupted to proclaim,“Governance is a...
Cysticercosis of the Human Nervous System
Cysticercosis of the Human Nervous System

Neurocysticercosis (neural infection by larvae of Taenia solium) occurs when humans become intermediate hosts of the tapeworm Taenia solium after ingesting its eggs. The disease is now the most common helminthic infection of the nervous system in humans, and its prevalence has risen significantly even in countries where it was...

Wilderness of Wildlife Tourism (Advances in Hospitality and Tourism)

Wildlife tourism is a growing multimillion-dollar industry within the hospitality and tourism industry. Wildlife tourism, in its simplest sense, is the creation of tour packages for watching wild animals in their natural habitats, and is particularly important in African and South American countries, Australia, India, Canada, Indonesia,...
