Handbook of Algorithms for Wireless Networking and Mobile Computing

Buy

Handbook of Algorithms for Wireless Networking and Mobile Computing focuses on several aspects of mobile computing, particularly algorithmic methods and distributed computing with mobile communications capability. This volume provides the topics that are crucial for building the foundation for the design and construction of future generations of mobile and wireless networks, including cellular, wireless ad hoc, sensor, and ubiquitous networks. Following an analysis of fundamental algorithms and protocols, the book offers a basic overview of wireless technologies and networks. Other topics include issues related to mobility, aspects of QoS provisioning in wireless networks, future applications, and much more.

Recent advances in wireless networking and mobile computing technology coupled with the increasing proliferation of portable computers have led development efforts for mobile systems toward distributed and mobile computing — a new dimension for future generation of mobile computing networks. Wireless and mobile technology is being used to link portable computer equipment to corporate distributed computing and other sources of necessary information. Many researchers and scientists from both academia and industry are undertaking efforts to explore new technology for mobile computing and wireless communication, in a heterogeneous wireless and wired network environment, with mobile computing applications.

Most of the available literature in this technology concentrates on the physical aspects of the subject, such as spectrum management and cell reuse, just to mention a few. However, in most of the literature, a description of fundamental distributed algorithms that support mobile host in a wireless environment is either not included or briefly discussed. As such, there is a need to emphasize other aspects of wireless networking and mobile computing systems. Another important requirement for successful deployment of mobile and wireless applications is the careful evaluation of performance and investigation of alternatives algorithms, prior to implementation. Consequently, research in the emerging wireless communication and mobile computing field needs to cover a wide area of topics and scenarios.

The primary goal of this book is to focus on several aspects of mobile computing and in particular algorithmic methods and distributed computing with mobile communication capability. We believe that these topics are necessary to set the background and build the foundation for the design and construction of future generation of mobile and wireless networks, including cellular networks and wireless ad hoc, sensor, and ubiquitous networks. This book comprises 43 chapters written by a group of well-known experts in their respective fields. All chapters cover a variety of topics, and provide not only a good background but also an in-depth analysis of fundamental algorithms for the design and development of wireless and mobile networks, in general.

Increasing Perceptual Skills of Robots Through Proximal Force/Torque Sensors: A Study for the Implementation of Active Compliance on the iCub Humanoid Robot (Springer Theses)
Increasing Perceptual Skills of Robots Through Proximal Force/Torque Sensors: A Study for the Implementation of Active Compliance on the iCub Humanoid Robot (Springer Theses)

This thesis proposes an effective methodology for enhancing the perceptual capabilities and achieving interaction control of the iCub humanoid robot. The method is based on the integration of measurements from different sensors (force/torque, inertial and tactile sensors) distributed along the robot’s kinematic chain. Humanoid robots...
