Human Computation (Synthesis Lectures on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning)

Buy

Human computation is a new and evolving research area that centers around harnessing human intelligence to solve computational problems that are beyond the scope of existing Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. With the growth of the Web, human computation systems can now leverage the abilities of an unprecedented number of people via the Web to perform complex computation. There are various genres of human computation applications that exist today. Games with a purpose (e.g., the ESP Game) specifically target online gamers who generate useful data (e.g., image tags) while playing an enjoyable game. Crowdsourcing marketplaces (e.g., Amazon Mechanical Turk) are human computation systems that coordinate workers to perform tasks in exchange for monetary rewards. In identity verification tasks, users perform computation in order to gain access to some online content; an example is reCAPTCHA, which leverages millions of users who solve CAPTCHAs every day to correct words in books that optical character recognition (OCR) programs fail to recognize with certainty.

This book is aimed at achieving four goals: (1) defining human computation as a research area; (2) providing a comprehensive review of existing work; (3) drawing connections to a wide variety of disciplines, including AI, Machine Learning, HCI, Mechanism/Market Design and Psychology, and capturing their unique perspectives on the core research questions in human computation; and (4) suggesting promising research directions for the future.

Table of Contents: Introduction / Human Computation Algorithms / Aggregating Outputs / Task Routing / Understanding Workers and Requesters / The Art of Asking Questions / The Future of Human Computation

Chip Multiprocessor Architecture: Techniques to Improve Throughput and Latency
Chip Multiprocessor Architecture: Techniques to Improve Throughput and Latency
Chip multiprocessors — also called multi-core microprocessors or CMPs for short — are now the only way to build high-performance microprocessors, for a variety of reasons. Large uniprocessors are no longer scaling in performance, because it is only possible to extract a limited amount of parallelism from a typical instruction stream...
Parallel Computing: Fundamentals, Applications and New Directions (Advances in Parallel Computing)
Parallel Computing: Fundamentals, Applications and New Directions (Advances in Parallel Computing)
This volume gives an overview of the state-of-the-art with respect to the development of all types of parallel computers and their application to a wide range of problem areas.

The international conference on parallel computing ParCo97 (Parallel Computing 97) was held in Bonn, Germany from 19 to 22 September 1997. The first conference in this...

HTML A Beginner's Guide (Beginner's Guide (Osborne Mcgraw Hill))
HTML A Beginner's Guide (Beginner's Guide (Osborne Mcgraw Hill))

When I was first approached about writing this book, I must admit that my thought was, “Another HTML book—how many do we need?” I learned HTML by experience when there was only one version of Netscape, and it had been a long time since I’d even looked at an HTML book. But after I researched the other HTML books on the...

Modeling, Estimation and Optimal Filtration in Signal Processing
Modeling, Estimation and Optimal Filtration in Signal Processing

The purpose of this book is to provide graduate students and practitioners with traditional methods and more recent results for model-based approaches in signal processing.

Firstly, discrete-time linear models such as AR, MA and ARMA models, their properties and their limitations are introduced. In addition, sinusoidal models are...

Handbook of RF and Microwave Power Amplifiers (The Cambridge RF and Microwave Engineering Series)
Handbook of RF and Microwave Power Amplifiers (The Cambridge RF and Microwave Engineering Series)
In 1989, I was responsible for organizing a workshop at the European Microwave Conference on High-Power Solid State Amplifiers. This workshop proved popular and so Artech House asked me to persuade the speakers to turn their material into a formsuitable for publication, the result was the book entitled “High-Power GaAs FET...
