Meet the iPad 2, 9780132819398 (0132819392), Pearson Education, 2011

Given Apple’s advertising budget and ubiquitous ads, plus an enormous amount of media attention, it’s still difficult to determine just what an iPad is. Is it a media player or a business machine? Does it replace a laptop? There are other tablet computers on the market, as well as “netbooks” that act like small laptops, and yet the iPad has captured people’s imaginations (and pocketbooks) like few other devices I’ve seen. It took only 28 days for Apple to sell 1 million iPads, and that was just in the United States alone; over the first 9 months, the company sold 15 million iPads worldwide.

I’ve owned an iPad since the first day it was available, and I still have trouble explaining it to people in just a few words. But I think I’ve figured out just what’s so special about it.

The iPad is the first real spontaneous device. It’s not as bulky as a laptop, and doesn’t need to be anchored in one room of the house the way a desktop computer usually is. The iPad can be anywhere in the house, or with you on the bus or train, and is a godsend for anyone that frequently travels by air in cramped middle seats. You can pick it up and search for something, like an actor’s name while watching TV, without having to relocate to “the computer” or trying to remember to look up the detail later. You can take the iPad into the kitchen and use an app such as Epicurious to find a menu and cook a meal.

At the same time, the iPad is not ultra compact the way a smartphone like the iPhone is. Although the iPad and iPhone share many of the same features—they’re both based on the same underlying operating system, the iOS—the iPad’s larger screen does make a difference when interacting with software, viewing photos, and reading electronic books (even if your eyes don’t see as well as they used to).

So what is the iPad? It’s all of the things I mentioned, enhanced by the way you interact with it by touch. It’s the first gadget in a long, long time that really makes a huge difference to use in person rather than just read about online. The iPad 2 is thinner and lighter than the original iPad, which makes a difference every time you pick it up—and, being a tablet, it’s almost always in your hands when you use it. At the same time, its powerful processor and faster graphics make everything quick and responsive. You forget you’re using a computer and focus on making music, watching an HD movie, creating a presentation, or video-chatting with remote friends and family members.

Also, this is just the beginning: Apple thinks the iPad is the future of “post-PC” computing. As someone who uses my iPad several times a day, every day, I’m inclined to agree.
