Active Directory is probably the most important feature of the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. It can be used by organizations and enterprises to centralize network information that was previously stored in diverse and incompatible databases. It can then distribute that information throughout the network and allow access to the information in a secure, robust fashion.

However, in the year since Windows 2000 has become widely available, many network administrators and developers have come to believe that Active Directory is too complex and difficult to work with. While I've worked on this book project, I've discovered that some of their reservations are understandable, but that others are groundless. Given its scope, Active Directory is relatively straightforward and the benefits it provides far out way the initial learning curve.

Software developers should be particularly excited about the potential of Active Directory because it allows them easy access to a rich store of information about a variety of network resources. New attributes and classes can be added to Active Directory and existing information extended to suit the needs of custom applications.

The goal of this book is to provide a practical understanding of Active Directory so that developers and network administrators can produce directory-enabled applications and automate administration tasks.
