Optical Switching / Networking and Computing for Multimedia Systems (Optical Engineering)

Buy
We have witnessed the rapid growth in the popularity of the Internet technology over the past few years. The current network technologies provide ubiquitous access to a vast amount of information on a huge variety of topics, but limited bandwidth has constrained the impact and growth of broadband multimedia applications. To allow new broadband services to reach their potential will require an exponential increase in bandwidth availability to all users. These demanding high data rate applications will require the development of a robust and stable network infrastructure.

At the current time, optical fiber is the medium of choice both to accommodate this bandwidth explosion and to meet the increasing demands for qualityof- service (QoS) required by the emerging multimedia applications. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) has provided the technological solution to increased network transport capacity. The next step in this evolutionary process is the implementation of photonic packet switching to offer high-speed data rate/ format transparency and configurability. This transformation to a packet-based environment is required to allow all the different forms of data and multimedia content that will need to be supported in tomorrow’s networks. While the debate about whether to have an optoelectronic or an all-optical (end-to-end) network rages on, the cost per bit continues to decline, and network operators continue to upgrade and improve their fiber-based networks to try to meet the needs of tomorrow’s broadband market.
