This book stemmed from the author’s other book—Software Performance and Scalability: a Quantitative Approach, published by Wiley in 2009. That book helps

readers grasp the basic concepts, principles, methodologies, best practices, queueing theories, and profiling tools associated with optimizing software performance and scalability in general. Many quantitative, real world case studies have been used to support the notions and theories presented therein. The book has been positively received around the world. Some readers suggested I apply the same style and approach adopted in that book, namely, basing all concepts and theories on quantitative, real world case studies, to explore systematically the art and science of optimizing the performance and scalability of some common foundational software platforms, such as database and virtualization platforms, upon which various software applications are built and run.
