OvER THE PAST fifteen years I have worked for Oracle Corporation, and with many customers who were keen to find the limitations of the (then) current Oracle database on the latest and greatest hardware platforms of the day.

These customers have demanded ever increasing database performance at what seems a continually reducing price. In these fifteen years I have seen CPU designs, operating systems, and programming languages develop, become popular, become a standard of the day, and then fallout of favor and eventually become relegated to obscurity. The only constant, from my somewhat narrow perspective, has been the Oracle database and its continual evolution and adoption to new hardware and software architectures and configurations.

I have worked with many of the contributors to this book, who have either spent time in their careers at Oracle or have been highly qualified users and customers of the Oracle database. Each of the contributors can recount the number of bottlenecks they have uncovered in applications, databases, or operating systems, in the course of developing, rolling out, and managing leading-edge Oracle database implementations. These experiences form the basis of many war stories which I'm sure will be repeatedly be debugged and debugged again allover the globe.
