The Big and the Small - From Microcosm to the Macrocosm: The Facinating Link Between Particle Physics and Cosmology

Buy
This book is the second part of the two-volume set entitled The Big and the Small. The first volume, Journey into the Microcosm: The Story of Elementary Particles, dealt essentially with the small, i.e., elementary particles. The present volume first takes the reader to the other extreme, the big or the cosmos, and then wraps up the story by briefly describing the fascinating connecting link between the two.

In a sense, the small and the big are like the two strands of the DNA; in this case they form the strands of the DNA of the cosmos itself. And without having some idea of the two strands separately, the interconnection just cannot be understood. In the earlier volumes in this series, we had glimpses of bits and pieces of the wonderful tapestry called the cosmos. We now stand back to take a parting look at the entire picture, its towering majesty, incomparable grandeur and indescribable beauty—an unfathomable mystery that continues to keep scientists engaged in the quest for the secrets unrevealed by nature.

I hope you the reader get as much enjoyment reading the book as 1 did in writing it. All the best!

"I would purchase the books... since I am Ipv6 connected it would be a nice reference."..."I do think that if you buy one you will buy the other, assuming that the chapters are setup correctly." -Randall Stewart, Cisco Systems

Malicious Mobile Code: Virus Protection for Windows (O'Reilly Computer Security)
Malicious Mobile Code: Virus Protection for Windows (O'Reilly Computer Security)

Here are some sure things: you can't get a virus by simply reading an email. Malicious code can't harm hardware. A virus can't hide from a booted, write-protected diskette. Your computer can't get infected from a picture file. I have given this advice hundreds of times and could repeat it in my sleep. It was the mantra of every...

HBase in Action
HBase in Action

I got my start with HBase in the fall of 2008. It was a young project then, released only in the preceding year. As early releases go, it was quite capable, although not without its fair share of embarrassing warts. Not bad for an Apache subproject with fewer than 10 active committers to its name! That was the height of the NoSQL...

Natural Computing: 4th International Workshop on Natural Computing

The complex behavior of systems in nature is rooted in intricate mechanisms of interaction that often supersede human-made systems in terms of reliability, power efficiency, and computational capacity. Researchers have begun to realize that natural systems are a great source of inspiration for novel algorithms in computation and communication...

Essentials of Apoptosis: A Guide for Basic and Clinical Research
Essentials of Apoptosis: A Guide for Basic and Clinical Research
Life and death are topics that no one takes lightly. In the cell, death by apoptosis is just as fundamental as proliferation for the maintenance of normal tissue homeostasis. Too much or too little apoptosis can lead to developmental abnormality, degenerative diseases, or cancers. Although apoptosis, or programmed cell death (PCD),...
