| We have entered a digital age in which preschoolers can handle a mouse better than a crayon. In this digital world children want to interact with information, not just receive it. Technology is as ordinary to them as television and radio were to previous generations. Computers and the Internet provide them with information and entertainment, sometimes to the exclusion of all else. Where does the library fit into this digital picture? Can we compete with a gigabyte Goliath?
The solution is to fight technology with technology. Instead of fearing the Internet as a pied piper luring children away from books, libraries should embrace its possibilities. The Internet can become a tool to bring the library to children, and to bring children into the library. This can be accomplished by creating service websites for children that offer traditional library services such as readers’ advisory and homework assistance that go beyond information by providing an empowering information environment. This book will provide you with insight into and guidance in planning and creating such sites.
This book is for children’s librarians who wish to explore expanding their children’s services via the Web. This is not a technical manual but a guide to the process of developing and implementing children’s service websites. Anyone interested in developing quality, advertisement-free children’s sites can benefit from this work. We have broken this guide into sections that deal with the planning process, design guidelines and special technical considerations, testing, marketing, and best practices, so you can read through the entire book or pinpoint the information that is most relevant to your project. |
